John Elder Cherrix (1929 - 2011)

John Elder Cherrix, affectionately known to his friends as "Jack", passed away on January 11, 2011.

Jack was born on November 1, 1929 in Nassawadox, Virginia to Eldred and Viola Cherrix, lighthouse keepers on the Chesapeake Bay.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Monica, one son, Chris, daughter-in-law Sharon Cherrix (Schuessler) and numerous nephews and nieces.

Jack attended the University of Maryland under the GI bill after serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon graduation, he was a manager at Price Waterhouse and lived in Northern Virginia. He and his wife moved to La Cañada, CA in 1971 where he was employed as Chief Financial Officer for Brown Company, a paper and pulp manufacturer.

After leaving the corporate world, he started a successful accounting consultation business and retired in 1998. Jack and Monica moved to the Oxnard area in 1999 where they have lived for the past 11 years. Jack was an amateur musician and songwriter, singing and strumming his ukulele and banjo at numerous "hoots" with his fellow Songmakers and friends at the Grindelwald Ski Club. He was very happy playing tennis with friends and volunteering in his community. Jack will be remembered for his quick smile, easy-going manner and enjoyment of good friends and family. He will be missed by all of us.
